The Wet, the Windy and the Weathered.
July 6th, 2008 — Uncategorised
It has been one of those weekends when you really wish you weren’t a gardener. The rain comes down, and down, and down and there is nothing you can do outside until it is too late.
It has rained practically all weekend which has meant I have bypassed the plot as I would just get covered in mud and you cant do anything in torrential rain.
Yesterday I had to go out to do a bit of shopping and got soaked just getting back to the car.
Still, today it has been a good excuse to stay in and watch the tennis, such as it is. It has been disrupted due to rain as well. There may be another bit of play today, the covers are coming off, but I don’t think it will settled tonight, unless one of them gives up.

Wet and Windy.

A bit wet today. Still managed to get something done. It’s also not doing my beans any good, this wind that is.
Gardeners World Live 2008
June 16th, 2008 — Uncategorised
Here we go again with the Gardener’s World Live. This year again at the NEC.
Last year I missed some of the show gardens as I spent too long inside with all the equipment, which I didn’t really want. I also saw Alan Titchmarsh on the stage, when I didn’t really want to. This year I by-passed all that and went straight to the show gardens and saw them all. I was also able to spend longer in the RHS tent getting very jealous of what they had grown in there. I know they have green/hot houses, but I still wish I had something resembling a glass-based building in which to bring on my seedlings and cuttings.
I wont bore you with the names of everything – you can see some of them on the pictures – just enjoy as much as I did.

My iris has finally come out. I put this in two years ago, but it has only just felt the desire to flower.
Well worth the wait I thought.
Hanging Baskets.
June 1st, 2008 — Uncategorised
Yesterday I decided I wanted to sort out my hanging baskets. It is getting late for some people, a neighbour has had theirs out for three weeks now! Still, they bought theirs and I am making mine up myself.
The videos that follow are a step by step guide to doing your own hanging baskets. I don’t profess to be the best hanging basket maker in the country, but I do my best.
I shall be bringing you pictures of them as they grow and bloom; so hopefully I will have something great to show you.

They are loved by butterflies, hoverflies and bees and attract aphid eaters! I want my beans to be clear this year, so hopefully this will work.
They give off bright green foliage and yellow-and-white flowers. They are a hardy annual that grows to about 15cm (6″)
I have about four of the plants and they should flower July-September.
They have started to flower now (May).
They have got even bigger now (19 May). Note the ‘bald’ patch in the middle:
I checked on them this weekend – 26/05/08 – and they were blowing in the wind.

Windy Plot.
May 27th, 2008 — Uncategorised
This weekend was a complete washout. High winds and rain stopped play for the most part. You can see this on the following video. I went to put the canes in for the beans – if not to put the beans in themselves.

I did manage to get out of the car and put some of the canes up, but then the heavens opened and I was relegated to the car in the hope it would stop.
